Dan Harmon ("Community") to Produce Bubbles Film About Michael Jackson's Chimpanzee

Every year since 2005, film executive Franklin Leonard has published the Black List, a survey of development executives’ “most liked” scripts of that particular year that have not yet been picked up and turned into movies. It includes plenty of projects (like The RevenantDjango Unchained, and plenty more) that have gone on to become successful and beloved films. Topping the 2015 Black List as executives’ favorite was Isaac Adamson‘s script for Bubbles–a story about Michael Jackson‘s life as seen through the eyes of his pet chimpanzee Bubbles. The script has now been picked up and will be produced by Dan Harmon (“Community,” “Rick and Morty”) and his Starburns Industries production company, according to Deadline. It will be made as a stop-motion animated feature in the vein of Anomalisa, the Oscar-nominated film that Harmon executive produced. Read the Black List‘s synopsis of the film, and watch a video of Channing Tatum announcing its List inclusion below.

A baby chimp is adopted by the pop star Michael Jackson. Narrating his own story, Bubbles the Chimp details his life within The King of Pop’s inner circle through the scandals that later rocked Jackson’s life and eventually led to Bubbles’ release.

Bubbles was born in Texas in 1983. During his life, he toured with Jackson, lived at the Jackson family home in California, and also stayed with MJ at Neverland Ranch. Since 2005, he’s lived at the Center for Great Apes in Florida.

In other recent MJ news, his estate agreed to sell its share of Sony/ATV Publishing to Sony. The Jackson estate will receive $750 million as part of the deal.
