Heartworn Highways, the excellent 1976 documentary following the rise of outlaw country music, is now streaming for 24 hours on Pitchfork.tv. Directed by James Szlapski and produced by Graham Leader, the film features performances from singer-songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Steve Young, David Allan Coe, and Larry Jon Wilson. It provides a first-hand look at their personal lives as well as the burgeoning outlaw country scene. Widely considered a cult classic, Heartworn Highways remained largely unseen until its DVD release in 2002. Watch it below. A sequel, Heartworn Highways Revisitedwas announced last year. You can also stream a clip of that below. Both streams will be available until 4 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, March 19.

A 40th anniversary box set of Heartworn Highways will be released on Record Store Day, which takes place April 16. The package, limited to 1,000 copies, comes in a custom wood box. It features a DVD of the film with restored image and sound plus 45 minutes of bonus features. The double LP soundtrack is pressed on whiskey-colored vinyl (with a download card). There’s an 80-page book with interviews, unseen photos, and more. There’s also a reproduction of the original poster. You can read more about it here.
