Spinning N.W.A.‘s “Fuck Tha Police” while police cleared out a bar has landed a Massachusetts DJ a fine for disorderly conduct, MassLive.com reports (via XXL). On October 17, DJ Boogy (real name: Kashawn Harris) allegedly played the 1988 protest song while local police were clearing out an over-capacity crowd at Shenanigans Pub, located in Westfield, Massachusetts. On March 11, a court found Harris responsible for disorderly conduct and ordered him to pay a $50 fine.

Westfield police officer Juanita Mejias, who was trying to cut the music, wrote in her official report, “I believed at that time the combination of alcohol, the excessive amount of people in the bar and the song that the DJ chose to play at that time was an intentional act by the DJ to incite the crowd [that] showed a reckless disregard for public safety.” More than 350 people were reportedly in the bar, which had a capacity of 160.

Harris wasn’t trying to stir up trouble, he told MassLive. He was in the midst of DJing a homecoming weekend party for his alma mater, Westfield State University. “I had no intention of inciting a riot,” he told MassLive. “It was just college kids having fun.” He said he had the song ready to go before the officers showed up and turned it off after playing only a clip. He said the bar emptied out not long after police arrived.

Next month, Kendrick Lamar will induct N.W.A. into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
